Doing something (what to do?)

I think I've spoken about this before on here, but I'm always torn about what to do with my web developer skills.

The nature of my work is usually not too complex, so I don't feel like I'm ever really progressing. Perhaps it's a sign for me to look for another job. It would probably pay a bit more.

However, I like my current role. It's comfortable. The people are great. There is some potential to develop professionally. Plus it doesn't take up so much time and energy that I can't do something more on the side.

I'm stuck between trying to build something to make money or something to help me learn and develop more. Sure, I could perhaps do both at the same time, but it seems risky to take on paying clients as a learing experience. And what do I want to learn anyway??

I think I need a mentor. I could pick the brains of work colleagues, but perhaps I should try and go to meetups and just find people to talk to about this. There's also Code Sydney - maybe I should jump on with them.
